88th pick DT Jordan Elliot

Jordan Elliot and Nick Harris are in the same situation. Both men are backups who many thought would be starters and both men are guys that are poised to start this year. If neither guy can step up and get their starting job, then they’ll show that they aren’t anything more than backups. The issue with both men is that, like with Harris, Elliot has been projected by the assumption that he’s good, but that he hasn’t been given the chance to show it.

If they’re given the shot, and they come up short, that will give everyone all the information they need. Unlike Harris, who may have some stiff competition, Elliot isn’t expected to have any competition. So if Harris doesn’t earn the spot, you can justify it by saying the guy who beat him is just better, not that Harris is bad. Yet with Elliot, he’s one of the two de-facto “best” players at the position. So if he can’t earn his starting role, he’ll likely be cut. Why carry a guy who just isn’t good?

97th pick LB Jacob Phillips

Jacob Phillips has been pretty much a non-factor in any capacity since getting drafted. He was supposed to help bolster the defense but all Phillips has done is get passed over time and time again for opportunities. Not only that, but he’s someone the Browns don’t seem all that high on. You hear the Browns talk about Donovan Peoples-Jones, Jordan Elliot, Nick Harris, and Harrison Bryant.

Yet, Phillips is often ignored when the team talks about players who are improving. If there’s an injury on the team, I can see Phillips being retained, but considering the team is carrying more linebackers than they need right now, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Phillips is the first Browns player from 2020 to be cut.
