Pick #142 – CB Cameron Mitchell

While Cameron Mitchell lacks optimal size for the cornerback position, standing at 5’11 and 191 lbs, he makes up for it by being very quick. His 10-yard had him post a 1.48, while his 40-yard had him at 4.47. He’s not fast for a prolonged period of time, so he can get beat deep, but it won’t be as likely with NFL-caliber (hopefully) safeties over the top.

While he did drop from year to year while at Northwestern in terms of execution, Mitchell is still a solid pick and with the right coaching may find the next level needed to succeed with the Browns.

He’s average at best against the pass coverage, be it zone or man but what he lacks in terms of raw coverage skills, he makes up for with a strong ability to wrap and tackle.

Player Comparision: Troy Hill

Draft Grade: C+

Thoughts: While I wouldn’t have gone cornerback at this point, with these prior selections, Mitchell will be a player the team needs long-term, assuming he can develop the skillset needed to stick around. With Denzel Ward being largely inconsistent from year to year and Greg Newsome’s rumored trade request, Mitchell may find himself in the action far sooner than expected.
