There Should Be Two Cleveland Browns QBs Drafted in 2016 NFL Draft

The Cleveland Browns are about to embark on a memorable season. This season will be remembered as ” the year before.” The year before what, you might ask. The 2015 season will be remembered as the final year of futility. Although, I don’t believe this season will be completely futile, my belief is that Cleveland will play really good football in 2015.

However, I’m afraid the quarterback position will greatly undermine what the rest of the team accomplishes.

With a young core of talented skill position players on the offensive side of the ball to compliment the dynamic defense, Cleveland needs a leader on the field. I know the season still has to play out, but no matter how good or bad the season goes for Cleveland, they need to draft a quarterback. Again.

In the pass-happy NFL, a quarterback is essential in winning a Super Bowl. To win a championship in today’s NFL, a team needs a leader; a leader with intelligence, athletic ability, and a desire to lead a group of men into battle, week after week. It always helps if said quarterback also has a strong and accurate arm.

Luckily for us Brown’s fans, the 2016 draft will be stocked full of quality quarterbacks. In fact, I believe this year’s crop of quarterbacks is the best and deepest in decades.

When Cleveland is on the clock during the 2016 NFL Draft, there could be a quarterback available for the team to draft who will hopefully end the sadness of Cleveland’s lack of success. If Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is available, Ray Farmer needs to select him like there’s no tomorrow.

Jones is a Ben Roethlisberger clone. He’s big, strong, mobile and has the strongest arm of any prospect coming out of any draft in the last 10 years. Jones has all the tangibles a franchise could want in their franchise quarterback.

Since anything can happen in the NFL, Cleveland should not just be okay with one quarterback selected, but instead should draft a second. Assuming that they would have already chosen someone in the early rounds, later in the draft there should also be other solid options to pick from.

If Wes Lunt from Illinois or Mike Bercovici from Arizona State are available, then Cleveland should use a second draft pick on a quarterback to strengthen the depth at quarterback. You never know when your second string quarterback is going to come in handy!  God knows us Brown’s fans are aware of that.

The Browns are a good football team. Their defense is deep at every position and it has quality depth. The same can be said for the offensive line. There might be four legitimate Pro Bowlers on the O-line alone. The team’s running backs are seemingly a secret that no one around the league knows about.

Most of the comments I have heard about the receiving corps are less than flattering, but the Browns’ receivers are a mixture of different sizes, speed and body type.

Taylor Gabriel is only 5’7″ 170 lbs and has been labeled by the ultra talented Cleveland secondary as the toughest guy to cover out of all of the Browns’ receivers. Rodney Smith is 6’5″ 230 lbs. He was described as a ” gazelle” running routes in camp this spring. Vince Mayle is 6’2″ 225 lbs. Each one of these three players brings a different skill set to the team. There is at least one other player similar in size and talent to each of those guys on the roster. There might not be a household name on the depth chart, but that doesn’t mean they can’t play. Who heard of Victor Cruz before they heard of Victor Cruz?

As crazy as it sounds coming out of my mouth, Cleveland is only four or five players away from making a deep postseason run. I believe that all the Browns need to win a Super Bowl is a good quarterback, a good tight end and one or two receivers.

I don’t blame other players for not wanting to play for the Browns. If I was coming out of college to play in the NFL, I would probably pray that Cleveland didn’t draft me. But times change and luck runs out.
