A growing logjam for the Cleveland Browns quarterback position continues to increase and not much (yet) has been done about it.

The Cleveland Browns organization, primarily Hue Jackson and the team’s front office has continued to mention the word competition at every position. Their approach of having competition makes complete and why wouldn’t such an approach be used.

Until the season start, Cleveland is not going to ease up on stating the word competition in regards to how the team’s depth chart and roster will look like. Currently, the Cleveland Browns have five quarterbacks on their roster.

Each of them are in different stages of their careers, so the level of (realistic) competition is likely not going to be as much compared to other positions. The Browns quarterbacks who were members of the team last season are Josh McCown, Austin Davis, and Connor Shaw.

Cleveland then added via free agency former Washington Redskins signal-caller Robert Griffin III and during the draft former USC quarterback Cody Kessler. Five quarterbacks are not going to last long on Cleveland’s roster.

Griffin and Kessler (being a second-day selection) are going to be listed on the depth chart, so where does that leave the previously mentioned three players? Given McCown’s experience in the NFL along with his ability to be a bridge (or solid backup) quarterback gives him the advantage to stay with the Browns.

That said, there are teams across the country whose quarterback situation (either starting, backup, or both) is on shaky ground. Teams could look to trade for McCown if their first couple preferences do not go as plan. Davis started one game last season and he also signed an extension.

At the time of his extension, it appeared that Davis had a future with the Cleveland Browns. Now that is far from a guarantee. Shaw has very minimal experience. He mainly has been the third-stringer or was signed as a practice squad player. Shaw also has had his share of injuries. Since Shaw is a developmental QB, his time to prove his worth is only so long.

Unless Griffin plays horrible out of the gate in camp and then preseason, he will be the starter. Assuming he is not dealt, McCown is the backup. If the Cleveland Browns do decide to move on from McCown, then Davis gets to stay on the roster. The question there becomes does Davis get to be the backup? I do not see how he is not.

The question there becomes does Davis get to be the backup? I do not see how he is not. Right now, though, McCown would stay on the roster if the season started today and Davis would be on the outside looking in.

Shaw does not have an opportunity with Cleveland in 2016 and going forward. Sooner rather than later, Cleveland should release him. Both Davis and Shaw have a chance to be practice squad players, but it is more likely for Davis. Lots of scenarios could play out and although there is a chance Davis could be on the depth chart, I do not see it happening.

The Cleveland Browns’ three quarterbacks on Sundays should be Griffin, McCown, and Kessler. Davis would be a great practice squad player but I am not sure how long he would last before another team would sign him.
