Sashi Brown has made an impact in his new role with the Cleveland Browns. Could his previous success be the stepping stone needed to become one of the best in his role?

The Cleveland Browns should’ve cut Barkevious Mingo a long time ago. Still, at least Cleveland made a move and their affiliation with one another is over.

The Browns have not been successful drafting, but during the 2013 NFL Draft, it was hard for anyone to hit on a top pick. That year’s draft is one of the worse of all time.

Mingo was Cleveland’s pick, sixth overall. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars selected at best, average tackles to start the draft (Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel respectively). Defensive end Dion Jordan went to the Miami Dolphins, while the Philadelphia Eagles took tackle Lane Johnson, but both have been dealing with suspensions or potential suspensions.

The Detroit Lions did hit on Defensive End Ezekiel Ansah, but again the misses definitely outweighed the hits. Although those were only a few of the picks, it laid the foundation for an overall disappointing draft.

Unlike previous Browns regimes, this one is willing to get whatever they can get, and use that as leverage for something greater. Mingo is not worth a fifth round pick but props go to Cleveland’s top decision maker, Sashi Brown.

Is Brown the next great NFL front office person? That will be determined, but he already has made a difference.

More from Factory of Sadness

In the ways he does business, his approach is similar to that of the Patriots’ front office. More recently and closer to their rebuilding approach however would be to that of the Oakland Raiders.

It is going to take some time for the rebuild to be complete. That said, two key factors in the Browns’ season could increase their planned timeline.

The first would be improved play by players like quarterback Robert Griffin III. The second part is Brown’s determination to move on from players sooner rather than later.

Mingo is a perfect example. He was not going to be part of the Cleveland Browns this season. In fact, he should not have been on the roster during his whole tenure!

That’s right, Cleveland completely blew their first round pick selecting him. Although the draft was bad, the Browns should have went another direction. If Mingo’s potential and production was on a level, most of it would have been on potential coming out of college.

Now, Brown has to correct past regimes’ mistakes. I would not doubt Brown making another trade involving players who have no business being on a roster.

There is a lot to like right now with what Brown is doing. Yet, the job has only begun. Brown’s way of doing things seemed to be the opposite of past regimes since day one and that shouldn’t stop now.

Think about the architects who built teams over the years, who became dominate and possibly dynasty-like. Some of those people ended up or will end up as a hall of famer. The Cleveland Browns are being built through the draft, while being led by a no-nonsense coach.

There are a number of moves that still needs made. Moving on from Mingo helps, but Brown must continue to remove the ones who are not fit.

Brown added multiple draft picks for the Browns over the next couple drafts, but whether he uses them or not is the question.

Next: No Reason To Trade Gordon

If it all works out for him, Brown in time could one of the best personnel decision makers in the NFL. Still, the wins and more talent must come and be consistent. All he needs to do is maintain his plan and get lucky at times for the Browns.
