Keeping Perspective

As much as Browns fans will celebrate the win, and rightfully so, there is still a lot of work to do. The Titans are not the best team that the Browns will see this year, and they still managed to give the Browns fits all day. We’ll run through the numbers later, but the Browns didn’t exactly dominate on Sunday. There needs to be better play on the edge and someone needs to remind Joe Haden that he can play like a Pro Bowler every week. But 1-1 feels good. It’s not that often that the Browns get to end the day in the victory formation.

Game MVP: Travis Benjamin

Was there any doubt? His three touchdowns made the difference and he showed some great chemistry with Johnny Manziel, who was also considered for this honor. For a team still searching for a reliable playmaker on the outside, Benjamin certainly made his case to be that guy today.

Play of the Day: Johnny Manziel Touchdown Pass

It’s hard to pick just one and the punt return score was a close runner up, but this play gets the nod not just for Benjamin’s effort, but for Johnny Manziel’s Houdini act to elude Brian Orakpo, roll to his left, and hit Benjamin deep for the touchdown. It was the best all around play for the Browns offense that saw some positive signs with Manziel at the helm.

Under the Radar Player of the Day: Isaish Crowell

Believe it or not, Crowell ended the day with 15 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown. After disappearing against the Jets, it was crucial to the Browns success to get  rushing attack going. Crowell stepped up and played well, showing better patience and more burst than last week.

The Game by the Numbers:

The Browns swarmed Marcus Mariota to the tune of 7 sacks, 11 hits, and 3 caused (2 recovered) fumbles on the rookie. This was a big reason why the Browns earned their first win of the 2015 season.

For the second week in a row, the Browns lost the time of possession battle, this week 35:11 to 24:49, which is a wide margin for a winning team. Part of the reason for that was that the Browns only managed 22 yards and 1 first down in the 2nd quarter.

After penalties completely derailed the Browns against the Jets, week two brought big improvement, with only 4 flags for 40 yards.

Don’t look now, but Johnny Manziel put up a 133.9 quarterback rating en route to his first NFL win as a starter. It was also his first start where he had more scores than turnovers.

Lastly, the best number of the day is zero. That’s how many turnovers the Browns had on the day.
