That’s a strong assumption that Josh McCown stays healthy and performs well enough to not fuel a genuine quarterback controversy. But given the premise of the question, Manziel would be put into a very tough spot and would have to see a pretty bleak future in Cleveland.

If two years go by without Manziel proving he is the better option, than why keep him on the roster? What incentive is there to have a player that is a clear number two option behind a journeyman like McCown?
I disagree wholeheartedly that McCown gives the Browns a better chance to win, but if Browns head coach Mike Pettine believes it, then there should not be a year three of Johnny Cleveland. That said, I earnestly believe that Manziel overtakes McCown before the end of the season and asserts himself as the quarterback of the future in Cleveland.
He showed better decision-making and an ability to make plays, not just “manage” the system. On a team devoid of playmakers on offense, Manziel represents the best option to manufacture points. However, if the coaching staff and front offense don’t believe it, then it’s all a moot point.
