All Depends On Quarterbacks’ (Outside Of RG3) Play During The Preseason

Ryan Rosko

Regardless of how Robert Griffin plays in the preseason, his spot is locked after being named the starting quarterback. Veteran Josh McCown’s future is up in the air. Given the pressing need for a player like McCown to be part of the Cleveland Browns this season, it is hard to imagine him being dealt.

Rookie Cody Kessler had a shaky preseason in Green Bay last night, while Austin Davis did nothing to change one’s opinion of him. Kessler was Browns head coach Hue Jackson’s choice, but that should not entitle him to anything.

More from Cleveland Browns

Play matters not where one is simply drafted in most cases. That is the case for Kessler. Davis must play lights out the rest of the preseason to prove his worth, assuming McCown stays with Cleveland.

At the same time, more is and will continue to be expected out of Kessler. He was drafted by Cleveland for a reason. If Kessler has another rocky outing versus Atlanta, I won’t go as far as saying he could get cut, but he will have a ton of work to catch up on.

It is just a matter of time before the Browns make a decision on Davis and McCown. One of them in some way will not be part of the organization.

Kessler will be part of the team this season, which should be obvious, but it is not. The exciting thing to watch is what they will do with Davis and McCown. If it were me, Davis would be cut sooner rather than later.
