Round 1, Pick 12, O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama, Grade: A

With their second round pick, Grossi believes the Browns will have their choice of the best quarterbacks, but they’ll pass, instead selecting Alabama tight end O.J. Howard.

Howard would be an excellent addition to a Browns team that needs a big, athletic target, who also happens to run block pretty well.

So how could the Browns pass up a quarterback?

Chalk it up to being one of those years for quarterbacks. Throughout the pre-daft process, no one is pulling ahead of the other, and the pundits are just guessing.

For the first time in six mocks, Grossi had Texas Tech gunslinger Patrick Mahomes being the first quarterback selected. Grossi has mocked  Mahomes to the Cardinals before, believing coach Bruce Arians will select him as the heir to Carson Palmer.

The Browns can’t afford to take a prospect as raw as Mahomes in the first round. He’d be better off going to a team with an established quarterback in place.

Grossi tapped DeShone Kizer at No. 25 for the Texas, and Deshaun Watson for the Chiefs at No. 27.

Mitch Trubisky falls as far as he ever has in Grossi’s mock, going 32nd to the Saints.

If Grossi’s mock plays out this way, Trubisky will be drafted one spot before the Browns at 33.

Go ahead, and put palm to face.

The longtime Browns scribe believes Cleveland is looking toward 2018 draft to target their quarterback of the future.

"Conventional wisdom says the Browns absolutely have to select a quarterback at No. 12 or No. 33. But the Browns now pride themselves on unconventional thinking. If they have determined that their quarterback savior most likely resides in the 2018 draft class, then they won’t take one in their early picks just to appease the masses."

Grossi doesn’t try to predict trades, but if the Browns don’t move up one spot for Trubisky, you can officially put this regime on the hot seat, at least in the mind of this sports yeller.
