3 reasons the Buckeyes will rout Northwestern

1. The Buckeyes’ offense will continue to impress as they wipe out the Wildcats.
Offensive consistency has been key for the Buckeyes throughout this season which has been the formula since week one. The Buckeyes came into this season with question marks on both sides but were hoping for the best when it came to the return of Justin Fields. The team got what they hoped for and much more as Fields has checked every box along the way.
The Buckeyes exceeded 50 points for the second time this season in their last game against Michigan State. Much of this was thanks to a hot start from Fields as he was responsible for three touchdowns in the first quarter. Two of those touchdowns were scored on the ground by Fields himself.
Fields finished the game with four total touchdowns including over 100 rushing yards and nearly 200 passing yards. He could have done much more, especially in the passing game, but the Spartans were already so far in the rear view by the third quarter that the Buckeyes coasted the rest of the way. One thing that seemed evident in this game was Fields’ sense of urgency in down-and-distance or goal line situations.
There looked to be much more patience in the pocket for Fields in his last showing as he seemed to realize as much as everybody else that he is the best athlete on the field. If there were no open targets down the field, he had no hesitation tucking the ball and picking up the yards himself because it will take more than one defender to stop him. Fields has displayed his ability to get the job done through the air all season and this past game proved he’s more than capable of running the ball while keeping himself out of harm’s way.
One of the biggest stories was Trey Sermon having himself a breakout game. After what was a somewhat slow transition into the Buckeyes’ offense, Sermon led the team with 112 rushing yards including a 64 yards touchdown. The team was expected to rely heavily on Sermon to start the season with J.K. Dobbins‘ departure and Master Teague recovering from injury. It is good to see Sermon finally gain some real confidence within the offense.
The Wildcats typically sport a solid defense each season and that has not changed this time around. They rank first in the Big Ten in scoring defense while coming in at third in total defense. The Wildcats could very well be the best defense the Buckeyes have faced thus far. Though they may not be as turnover savvy as Indiana, the Buckeyes will need to stay on their game to get through the Wildcats. Expect the Buckeyes to take care of business offensively and finish out the Big Ten slate strong.
