Grading all of Cleveland Browns signings through the first 2 days of the free agent period
By Chad Porto
Ethan Pocic
The Cleveland Browns have re-signed Ethan Pocic on a three-year deal worth $18 million. While the exact specifics of the deal aren’t known, it’s very likely that most of that $18 million will be paid out in year three. I’d be surprised if the deal was guaranteed for anything more than half of the contract. Which is still a lot of money for Pocic.
Pocic, a bonafide one-year wonder, was such a question mark by the NFL as a whole, that he didn’t get any better offers for his services. Despite only being 27 and being 6’6 with positional versatility. The Browns over-paid Pocic, whose only good year as a pro was in 2022 with the Browns, but bringing him back may be a bigger indictment for how the team sees backup Nick Harris.
Clearly, the Browns have no faith in Harris if they over-paid Pocic.
So who is Pocic? Is he Wyatt Teller 2.0, an All-Pro player who was just looking for the right home, or is he a one-hit wonder? We’ll find out in 2023. One of the things he’s got to do better is pick up blitzes and work on his pass-blocking as a whole. He’s a good run-blocker but too often guys would get deep in on him during passing plays. That has to be corrected.
His contract is a bit heft, and his play had some gaping holes in it, but overall the Browns could’ve done far worse than re-signing him. With Pocic coming back, it’s fair to say that Berry has no faith in his own drafted players. Which is maybe the biggest cause for concern.
