5. Pat Shurmur

With an assumed Jackson firing, Shurmur is the unlikeliest of candidates on this list to head to Cleveland. Not because he has already coached the Browns but because there are better options elsewhere for him.

Shurmur coached Cleveland back in 2011-12 but he finished with a 9-23 record. Shurmur wasn’t ready to be a head coach then, especially for a team like Cleveland.

Then again, most coaches would have had a hard time winning, regardless, with players like Greg Little, Mohamed Massaquoi, Colt McCoy, and Kaluka Maiava on the roster.

Shumur, like Jackson prior to being hired in Cleveland, is a very popular coaching option around the NFL. His experience with the Browns will benefit him wherever he goes.

That said, wouldn’t it be nice to have an established offensive coordinator to build up DeShone Kizer and whoever else is a quarterback on the roster come the fall? It would be and especially with a redemption mindset turning the Browns around would be a great story to tell. Just imagine that 9-23 record turning into .500 and better.

Shurmur would do better this time around. Thanks to his work with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings though, more secure job openings are his best bet. I mean just look at what he’s done with a journeyman quarterback in Case Keenum along with no Dalvin Cook!

I wouldn’t be opposed to Shurmur again but with four teams interviewing him according to the Star Tribune, Shurmur will get a job.. just likely not in Cleveland.
